Why, look – it’s Abraham Lincoln, telling that guy in the funny hat that it is my parents’ anniversary. Happy anniversary, Mom and Dad!

I’ve heard of brown-nosers, but not blue-nosers! Well, Aaron, that’s what you get for engaging in an egg-dye fight…

Barack does Boise

February 2, 2008 · 1 Comment

I was not one of the people who got there at 5 AM, but I did get up at 6 on my Saturday. Why?

We weren’t close enough to get to the rope line…

But we were close enough to make it into this shot, running on the Boston Globe’s website. I’m inside the little red circle, which you won’t be able to see very much unless you zoom in a bit.

This was pretty much an intensely big deal. Before Mitt Romney swung by Boise last June, the area hadn’t seen a visit from a major presidential candidate since the 1970s. Why waste the time and energy coming to Idaho? It’s the reddest of the red states. You kind of understand Romney swinging by; this is, in many ways, Salt Lake North, and he has his fair share of support here. But a Democratic candidate? A rock star candidate like Obama? In Boise?

Then again, Obama has had a very active headquarters and campaign staff in Boise for months now. He’s not giving up on Idaho just because it looks like a foregone conclusion.I’m not going to talk about Obama in this post; I may in a while, though. But there are plenty of people across the country talking about the fact that he took the time out of his busy pre-Super Tuesday schedule to come to Boise State’s campus and talk for a standing-room-only, hundreds-of-people-turned-away-at-the-door crowd.

(Just read this: “The Obama campaign organizers are estimating that the crowd reached 14,161 –- which would be a record crowd in the 25-year-old arena.” Damn.)

Daily JPG 12

January 12, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I’ve jumped ahead to JPG 12, from JPG 7. I decided that I wanted to be able to keep track of it based on the day in the year – y’know? So that, if I keep this up, on December 31 I’ll post JPG 365. I’m going to go back and fill in those 5 blanks soon; on this blog they’ll show up on the correct date, but I am cross-posting this on a blog that won’t let me backdate, so they’ll be out of order. Oh well. :) No one ever said this was going to be a professionally managed project.

Today’s Daily JPG is a picture of Ryan’s two architectural birthday cakes. Ryan’s favorite flavor – really the only flavor he’ll eat – is “pink cake.” I decided to use my new cake pan to make him a PRETTY PINK PRINCESS CAKE. It was strawberry cheesecake flavored cake with cherry chips and a strawberry icing glaze, surrounded by chocolate rocks. The doors and windows are outlined (badly) with pink glitter gel icing.

Then I got to thinking about the fact that there were eight people going to be there with a pretty small cake, and that a PRETTY PINK PRINCESS CAKE might not be the ultimate in manly birthday menu items. That’s about the point in time when I found a football stadium cake pan at Walmart on sale for $7. I’d been eyeing it for a while, at various stores, so when I found it on sale I immediately hatched a plan. The stadium is a peanut butter cake with chocolate chips in it, drizzled in Reese’s ice cream topping. The field is made of colored frosting and sugar sprinkles (which look EXACTLY like turf), and the spectators are candy-coated chocolate-covered sunflower seeds. It’s a special game scheduled for Ryan’s birthday: Boise State vs. Borah High School. The white section is the band. I made goalposts out of yellow paperclips. The stadium lights are yellow lollipops, and the field logo is an old patch I had in my craft things.

Daily JPG 7

January 11, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I am pre-dating this post so that it appears on the 11th, although I am posting it on the 12th. Didn’t have time to do Daily JPG yesterday as it was Ryan’s birthday, and besides, I wanted to use a birthday picture. And so… here you go:

7

Here is Ryan cheating in his efforts to blow out 30 CANDLES on his PRETTY PINK PRINCESS CAKE. No one even realized he was doing it until the photo appeared on my camera, at which point I promptly called him out. My dad had noticed all the moisture and wondered if Ryan had sprayed 7-Up on the cake. (Ew.) But no; this is a computer geek family, and when we cheat at blowing out candles, we do it with canned air. :)

Happy birthday, sweetie. :)

In Which We Go Over the River and Through the Woods

November 19, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Haven’t had time for a real post in ages, and judging from the list of things I have to do today I won’t today, either, but I thought I’d share some pictures from an expedition to an area pumpkin patch.

Me, with large pumpkins (is that a double entendre in your pocket?)

Ryan with tiny pumpkin (oh dear):

Lots of tiny pumpkins!

T5

Ryan joins me with large pumpkins and, between the two of us, we manage to take exactly zero pictures wherein both of our eyes are open:

I like trees that are this easy to climb.

I was taking a picture of all the gourds lying in a crate, and Ryan found this one and felt the need to plop it on top right in the middle of my up-until-then not inappropriate photo:

It’s hard to get lost when you’re twice as tall as the labrynth.

T1

“I’m sorry… WHAT holiday did you say was coming up?”

T4

Oh yes, the pumpkin patch was also a Thanksgiving turkey farm. Hungry yet?

T2

Turned two of my favorite pictures into desktop backgrounds, feel free to steal.
